WHAT IT TAKES TO PRESS HANDSTANDS

Press handstands are a favourite of ours at DSG. It’s a challenging gymnastics move that requires a lot of strength, skill, and flexibility. To improve your press handstand, you can do a variety of exercises to build the necessary strength and skills.

Here are some essentials from our Press Handstand class.

  1. Handstand balance: working the long straight handstand balance holds
  2. Straddle handstand balance: in various straddle position, with the legs higher and lower in the straddle
  3. Dynamic handstands: moving from a straight to star to straddle
  4. Pancake: flexibility will help get a nice compressed position
  5. Seated straddle compressions: having strength in the pancake position is essential
  6. Planche leans: the degree of planche lean differs greatly from from person to person depending on flexibility

Learning a press handstand takes time and practice, so be patient and consistent with your training.
